Note from Prof. Beex to Interested Students

The admissions process is handled by the Graduate School, with assistance of a Departmental Admissions Committee. Prof. Beex is not involved in the admission of individual students, so that it is not productive to send him application materials.

Financial support is a resource highly competed for, and not generally available to newly arriving students. It can come in the form of a GTA (Graduate Teaching Assistant), GA (Graduate Assistant), or GRA (Graduate Research Assistant). The GTA and GA are under control of the Department, and are generally given to students who apply for them, have themselves taken (at VT) the laboratories for which they request to serve as GTAs, and are in excellent command of the English language. The GA position generally requires grading of student papers. The GRA positions are under control of individual professors in the Department, and usually offered to selected students the professor is already familiar with (for example, because they took some of his classes during their first couple of semesters at VT, or because they are already involved in his/her research on an unfunded basis).

For students interested in doing research in the DSPRL, under the direction of Prof. Beex, there are generally M.S. and/or Ph.D. positions open that are not funded. For many years, funded positions in the DSPRL have been filled by students already working in the DSPRL on an unfunded basis. The latter is not expected to change in the foreseeable future.
